Field Note 07: Initial Handshake Attempt
— Observer Activation Log —

The Observer module was brought online at 04:00 hours under controlled conditions. Containment fields were stabilised, conduit pressure equalised, and the apprentice confirmed that all non-critical warnings were “within acceptable experimental parameters”. This statement was not questioned further, though several staff expressed silent reservations.
The module initiated its pattern-matching routines immediately upon activation. At 04:00:16, the first alignment attempt began — brief, unstable, but undeniably present. Waveform readings showed irregular peaks suggesting the anomaly was adjusting in response to the module’s probes.
At 04:00:39, a cluster of pulses emerged that matched the earlier HELLO WORLD signature. The Observer responded by opening a narrow data window, attempting to negotiate a shared encoding layer. For several seconds, both systems exchanged incomplete fragments: tonal sequences, corrupted packets, rhythmic pulses that hinted at structure.
Then the anomaly emitted a sudden harmonic spike. The Observer froze mid-routine. All terminals displayed a static pattern resembling syntax, but not in any language recognised by Directorate archives.
Fix initiated a forced reset, muttering that the module had “overreached”. The apprentice insisted the reaction was evidence of progress. Sophie reviewed the frozen data and concluded that both systems had attempted to complete the handshake — but lacked enough common structure to succeed.
At 04:01:12, the anomaly withdrew. All signals returned to baseline.
Preliminary assessment: the entity recognised the attempt, and attempted to respond. Further alignment trials may be possible if the Observer module is reinforced and its interpretive routines expanded.
A second activation window is under review.
End of activation log.
